More and more parents-to-be all over the world are choosing the comfort and reassuring support of birth with a trained labor companion called a "doula." This warm, authoritative, and irreplaceable guide completely updates the authors' earlier book, Mothering the Mother, and adds much new and important research. In addition to basic advice on finding and working with a doula, the authors show how a doula reduces the need for cesarean section, shortens the length of labor, decreases the pain medication required, and enhances bonding and breast feeding. The authors, world-renowned authorities on childbirth with combined experience of over 100 years working with laboring women, have made their book indispensable to every woman who wants the healthiest, safest, and most joyful possible birth experience.

The Baby's Coming tells the stories of her training as a midwife as well as some of the most memorable of those 350 births: the most dramatic, the most touching. It's important to have a "go bag" ready for you when you get called into a birth. This bag needs to be just large enough to carry the essentials, but small enough not to take up too much room in the birth room. Zipper pockets for storage and organization are an added bonus.
In the birth room it is important for you AND mom to stay hydrated. Having an insulated, spill proof, water bottle is an absolute must. Being able to close the mouth piece is an added bonus to prevent the spread of germs.
Strong weave cloths are great tools to have in your comfort measures arsenal. You can use this to help mom with hip squeezes, belly lifts, shaking the apple tree and more!
Silicone straws are the best because you or your client can chew on them without them breaking or falling apart and bend them in every direction. Moms get into all sorts of crazy positions during labor and birth and a bendy straw make hydrating so much easier.
Using the right amount of pressure in the right place can make a world of difference to a laboring mom. Depending on your comfort level, consider using a tool to help you massage and comfort your client during labor.
Using massage rollers to massage your client can take some of the pressure off of you to constantly push with your body weight. There's no replacement for proper body mechanics, but massage rollers are easy to use and can provide tremendous relief.
Labor is hard work and requires all of mom's energy. Honeysticks are a birth room staple between natural birth professionals. Honey gives mom a lot of quick calories through easily digestible sugar. The taste is delicious, the impact instant, and the plastic stick is easy to hold and maneuver in all positions.
Lavender is widely accepted as a calming scent and is a great choice for labor massage oil. Pumps are great at home, but make sure your birth bag has a top that closes completely. You don't want to make an oily mess in someones birth room!
Throughout labor, especially during transition, mom's temperature will fluctuate wildly. One moment she's hot and sweaty, the next she's freezing. Having some small cloths on hand allows you to give mom a cool or warm rag whenever and however she needs it.
There's nothing more frustrating than strands of hair falling in your face during a painful contraction. Having head bands available for mom can make a huge difference in her ability to focus and feel in control.
Labor gets messy in so many ways and having some order can make a real difference for a mom who is starting to feel out of control. Most people enjoy the nurturing sensation of getting their hair brushed, this is no different when in labor. Additionally, the wide tooth comb can act as a great counter pressure distraction in moms hand during contractions.
Being able to quickly move hair out of the way is a tremendous help during labor and afterwards. We refer to these as the ultimate mom doo tool and always have a couple in our bag with some hair rubber bands as well.
